CI&T has acquired renewable energy certificates (I-RECs) to cover 100% of the electricity consumption of its operations in Brazil. May 30, 2023 | min read ESGEnvironmental By Gabriela Simões To further reduce our environmental impact, starting in 2023, we will also seek to support cleaner and renewable energy. For this reason, all energy consumption from our Brazilian operations has been offset through I-RECs. This means that all company electricity in Brazil comes from clean and renewable energy sources. The electricity consumption has been covered by the purchase of I-RECs from wind energy on the northeastern coast of Brazil, which includes the consumption of headquarters in Campinas and Curitiba, as well as biogas from the digestion of organic waste produced in a landfill, sourced from the Belo Horizonte office. The link to the certificates will be available at the end of the article. But what exactly are RECs? REC stands for 'Renewable Energy Certificate.' On the other hand, I-REC refers to RECs that adhere to the international standard set by the IREC Standard Foundation, which is widely recognized internationally. I-RECs are legal instruments used in energy markets to account for renewable electricity and allocate its portions to consumers. Each REC represents a unit of renewable energy generation. 1 REC = 1 megawatt-hour, equivalent to 1000 kilowatt hours of renewable energy injected into the renewable power system. I-RECs aim to track and document renewable energy origin, enabling companies to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Some of the benefits of supporting these certificates include: Commitment to sustainability: By acquiring I-RECs, CI&T supports renewable energy investment. This contributes to reducing dependence on fossil fuels and mitigates climate change.Renewable energy credits: By acquiring these certificates, it implies that carbon emissions from scope 2, which are indirect emissions from energy generation1, are equivalent to 0 tons of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.Traceability and transparency: I-RECs have traceability systems that ensure the authenticity and origin of renewable energy. This provides transparency, guaranteeing the clean origin of what is consumed.Support for renewable energy development: By acquiring I-RECs, CI&T contributes to the development and investment in renewable energy projects. This helps drive the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy matrix. 1 approach for purchase choice In the coming years, CI&T will continue monitoring its electricity consumption, always seeking to offset it through clean and renewable energy, demonstrating its commitment to sustainability and climate change mitigation.
