Nature-based carbon removal Apr 13, 2023 | min read ESGEnvironmental By Gabriela Simões Brazil boasts the greatest biodiversity in the world. And as a company with Brazilian origins, we have a responsibility to support the conservation and restoration of our country's biomes. These biomes are responsible for providing essential ecosystem services and play a crucial role in the planet's future. Therefore, we choose to support nature-based carbon removal projects that ideally operate within our geographic footprint and promote ecological restoration, enhancement of ecosystem services, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, and community development.Nature-based carbon removal projects aim to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere by utilizing the natural ability of ecosystems to capture and store carbon. These projects seek to protect, restore, and expand natural areas, such as forests, mangroves, and agricultural soils, which can remove and store carbon from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and other biological interactions. Furthermore, these projects bring additional benefits, such as conserving biodiversity and increasing the climate resilience of local communities. Examples of nature-based carbon removal projects include tree planting, restoration of degraded areas, and regenerative agriculture. CI&T is proud to announce that in 2022, we offset all emissions from our Brazilian operations. We support a project that promotes sustainable, regenerative agriculture, located on coffee farms in the south of Minas Gerais, in the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado biomes. The project identifies and maps minerals naturally present in the soil, providing recommendations and good practices that are appropriate for the agricultural cycle. The project brings cutting-edge technology to the promotion of regenerative agriculture, thus increasing the permanence of carbon in the soil. "The financial incentive of the carbon project benefits the community by encouraging and maintaining investment within the property to improve carbon sequestration practices. It also empowers the surrounding area, including communities and family farmers, and invests in the education of young people in the community."
